Abandoned time and again by those he holds dear, Patrick Clement is forging a reputation as a forensic sculptor, helping to identify the unclaimed missing. But he can’t leave behind a remarkable summer night in 1993, spent alone on Brighton’s derelict West Pier with Black, a beautiful photography student. Patrick is haunted by the fact that no sooner did he get to know her than she disappeared from his life...
Who is this girl? And where is Black, the one who got away?
Decades on, while at work, Patrick is tasked with reconstructing the skull of an unidentified girl found on the pier in the 1970s – the pier he still thinks about. A crime he recalls from childhood, when his family life was in turmoil, Patrick works to discover the truth behind what has happened.
Set in Brighton, The Girl on the Pier spans several decades, from the seventies to the present day. Inspired by literary novelists such as Ian McEwan, Anne Tyler and John Updike, Paul uses vivid images to make the reader feel as though they are right there in the story. The Girl on the Pier will appeal to lovers of psychological thrillers and suspense novels.
The Girl on the Pier eBook Paul Tomkins
As a first novel by this author, it builds the tension very well. There is a set of seemingly parallel stories, that turn out to be flashbacks to different eras; and this works very well. Some of the descriptions and metaphors are a little wooden but the details and thoughts of the insecure characters take me back to my adolescent years. The book is great value and kept me reading! The Girl on the Pier eBook Paul Tomkins Reviews
The story of a man who is emotionally impaired by the loss of his parents in childhood. He is depressed, introverted and insecure his whole adult life.
Why read his story? It is told in a way that mysteriously ravels all the lies in his life together, then unravels them all in amazing fashion. I was held by the question of " what's next?" til the end.
Way too much fluff. I'm not saying it's not any good........just saying it does not appeal to me. It's like the author found a book of adjectives and couldn't use enough of them. I found that I could skip entire pages and still be in sync with the main theme. I admit........I couldn't finish it. Too many descriptive words and not enough action.
It's the story of a psychopath.... written in the first person... only we don't know that. The book seems to begin normally enough... a narrative of a struggling boy and a disrupted family. We read of murder. And only as the book progresses towards its final pages do we begin to get some inkling that, as the noose closes in, our narrator has, in fact, been the perpetrator as well... just not as he remembers it.
From the very start, I was hooked, taken in to the place where this novel lives breathes. Page after page, this book is hard to put down. The twists and turns are dizzying and you won't believe how it all unfolds. In fact, I still don't. If you enjoy a good, suspensful, dark read, this is one is for you. It leaves so many questions unanswered, but in the best possible way. Can see this developing into a series, fingers crossed! You won't be disappointed.
I really enjoyed this book. Patrick was a complex character, and the author let us get to know him intimately. Of course that is only through his own very narrow vision, but that's what makes the story so good. About halfway into the book I began to suspect what was going on, but it didn't make me any less eager to see what happened. My only disappointment was the end; I felt a bit like the story was left hanging. After such depth in the rest of the story, the ending left me feeling like it had suddenly been yanked away. It felt rather unfinished to me. However I still loved this book and loved getting to know the main character so deeply. The buildup was fantastic. Overall a very enjoyable read!
"The less you know about someone, the more personal you can make their story." As soon as I read this line, I knew I had to write it down. My husband tells me that I can come up with very definite opinions about people I barely know - and I'm afraid he's correct. In this book, a young man spends less than 24 hours with a woman in a day that becomes so memorable to him that the idea of her never leaves his thoughts. The book is written beautifully, but bear in mind that it moves at a very leisurely pace as it also moves back and forth through periods of his life - and leaves us wondering how much of what we remember (or tell ourselves we remember) can be accepted as truth. An intriguing book that builds quietly to a very satisfactory conclusion.
Pro-tip this may be Paul Tomkins' debut novel but make no mistake, having released 11 books of featured sportwriting, he is already an old hand at this publishing words malarkey. And it shows, too, however fiction may differ from sportswriting, Tomkins' tone and rhythm is assured from the start.
I'd read three of his 11 sportsbooks and followed his website for years so I was very curious to see how his foray into fiction would pan out. I must admit, though I like his sportswriting, I did not expect such a great debut. I bought the version yesterday and devoured it in a matter of hours. It is unputdownable, as people say.
I can recommend this book highly, to lovers of good writing in general. Tomkins will not disappoint you (though some of his characters may). Give this sinewy, seductive, surprising story a chance. You won't regret it.
