After a series of events involving drugs, alcohol, and men, the young woman descends into a series of mental breakdowns.

"Sex, Drugs, and Psychiatric Wards" by Eve Lopez reads like a diary, and an honest one at that. I often forgot that it wasn't true. I don't have much in common with Lucy, the main character, but within a few pages I was totally connected to her.I found myself wanting better things for her and for her to find love and happiness. But Eve Lopez created this amazing young woman and never slipped an inch. She stayed completely true to this character, in every event, situation, and dialogue. Soon after, I would think,'Yeah, Lucy would definitely say that.' I became pretty close to this young, lost woman and cherished my evening time I got to read about her.Lucy was raised in a very destructive home. Leaving for college was her true beginning to find her place in this world. Her mother was mentally ill and had abandoned her, and her father was detached and put his daughter on the back burner. I believe Lucy went away to college to run. To be free of all her pain she couldn't express verbally. She was running from her fears, and running from the truths she knew were there all along. Not fitting in at college made her run again, but the transportation she chose was alcohol and drugs. Mental health units, suicide attempts, and self-destructive behavior almost brought her to the end.
This is such a thought provoking novel. If you take your time reading this book, as did I, you'll find many different facets to Lucy, and many underlying psychological problems that were well threaded in this book. Being a nurse for as long as I was, I can tell you that Lucy's story isn't off base. Neither was her medical treatment or anything else she went through. I found myself wanting to reach out to her, even though I knew she was fictional. That just tells you something about this writer's wonderful ability.
If there was a sequel to this novel, I would love that. I would like to find out what happens to Lucy after she arrives in New York, when she grows up...all of it. This is definitely an author I will follow. She is an amazing story teller.

Sex Drugs and Psychiatric Wards Eve Lopez 9781475009088 Books Reviews
I have to admit, I rarely read debut novels. I usually wait until an author has written 2 or 3 books before I give them a try. I may then go back and compare their early, formative style to what emerges later. But I'm glad I took a chance with Eve Lopez's Sex, Drugs and Psychiatric Wards. Right from the beginning, there's a strong, developed writing style that I immediately enjoyed. There's a sparseness to the prose, an economy of words that manages to say precisely what is necessary and, when appropriate, quite beautifully. This kind of story has been told (and lived!) many times before but here, all of the magic is in the telling. I eagerly look forward to Ms. Lopez's next novel.
Very fast read, leaves the writer hanging and not much about her Psyc care. Very graphic sexual abuse be warned
All the scenes in this novel are cinematic. While reading this work I felt as though I was ensconced on my couch before the TV, mesmerized by the bizarre action taking place. Lucy, the anti-heroine, is a sexual porcupine; that is, she is pricked by her male paramours, who are plentiful. She loves to be f***d. She loves drugs, from coke, ecstasy to meth. She loves alcohol from run and coca cola, vodka straight to swigging beer.
After her mental breakdowns and unsuccessful suicidal attempts she finds herself in a nuthouse. These institutions are not like the unsafe haven found in One Flew Over The Cookoo's Nest. Her incursions into the mad houses are a place of refuge for our anti-heroine. She is in safe houses, where the hospitality intrigues her; where she makes friends with the staff and other patients.
After release from the safe house, she returns to her former ways while she parties during her college daze in the school declared as "the party college of the USA" by Playboy.
She continues being pricked by male pricks. She repeatedly tells us she loves to be f***d and then screwed by her paramours. Her actions continue to cause mayhem. I wonder if she will ever learn from her doomed relationships.
As William Blake noted, "A fool persists in his/her folly until the fool becomes wise." Does Lucy, the anti-heroine, become wise? Take a look at this cinematically-written novel and find out.
This book was a very emotional read for me. Ms. Lopez was able to paint a vivid picture, which brought the heart-wrenching scenes in the book into stark relief. The graphic scenes of sex, drugs and especially the suicide attempts, most definitely kept me interested, I couldn't wait to read on, to find out what happened next. The main character in the book seemed bent on self-destruction, and I found myself rooting for her. This book is a great eye-opener for anyone, particularly women, who find themselves addicted to drugs, and searching for relief. Great read!
